What it is
Nostr has no central moderator. Instead, Nostr Vault trusts who you trust. Your web has three rings:
- Following: the people you follow.
- Vouched: people that 10 or more of your follows follow.
- Further out: people your follows follow, but fewer than 10 of them.
Your vault relay rebuilds the web on its own once a day. If you follow very few people, it borrows from your follows' follows so a new account isn't empty.
The WoT tab
The globe
Open the WoT tab. You're in the middle. Your follows sit on the first ring, Vouched people on the next, and everyone else is a faint outer shell. Each person always sits in the same spot, because their place comes from their key.
- Layers. The menu at the top left picks Everyone, Following, Vouched or Further out, each with a count. Vouched shows up once your vault has counted your web.
- Filters. Talk with you keeps people you've replied to, reposted, liked or zapped, or who did that to you. Follow you back keeps follows who follow you too.
- Find someone. Tap the magnifier and type a name. Your follows come first, then your web, then everyone else.
Why someone is here
Trust paths and their web
Tap a face to open their card. The line under their name says how they reach you, for example "You follow them · 1 hop" or "Followed by Ann, Bo + more you follow · 2 hops". If no one you follow follows them, it says "Not in your web".
From the card you can follow or unfollow, open their Profile, or tap See their web to put them in the middle and see the globe from their side. A globe opened from a profile or a post has Open in WoT instead, which takes you to the WoT tab.
A post's Event Info shows the same trust path for its author.
The numbers
My Web and rebuilding
Tap My Web for the whole picture: how many people are in your web, how many you follow, how many are Vouched, who talks with you and who follows you back. Under Upkeep it says when the web was last rebuilt.
Just followed a lot of people? Tap Rebuild your web (in My Web, or at the bottom of the layer menu). The globe shows each step: reading your follow list, reading your follows' lists, counting. A full rebuild can take a few minutes. If it fails or the vault relay isn't running, the globe keeps your last saved web.
Where it's used
What your web decides
- Who can reach your vault. Only people in your web can post to your vault's inbox. Strangers can still reply to or quote your own posts.
- Notifications. Replies, likes and mentions notify you only from people in your web. Zaps, follows and messages always come through. A new follower outside your web is folded into "N new followers".
- Feeds. Global, Media and the other discovery feeds show only your web unless you switch them to Everyone. Everyone unlocks once you follow 5 people. See Feeds.
- Search. Your follows and your web rank above everyone else.
- Mesh photos. Photos load over the mesh only from people you follow, not from your wider web.
Settings
Who Can Reach You
On iPhone and Android, open Settings → Your Vault Relay → Who Can Reach You. Follow Distance sets how far out your web reaches (3, your whole web, to start), Minimum Followers how many of your follows must vouch for someone further out, and Refresh Trust List how often it's rebuilt. Details on Who Can Reach You.
On each device
- iPhone, iPad and Android have everything on this page.
- The web app has a WoT tab with a Globe and My Web. It builds your web in the browser from follow lists, so there's no Rebuild button and no trust settings. Its search box says "Find a name, npub or key".
Replay it in the app: Settings → Help → Tutorials → Your Web of Trust.
