Using the app

Your feeds

Nostr has no algorithm picking for you. Nostr Vault gives you a set of feeds, each a different way to look at Nostr, and you decide which ones you see and in what order.

The feeds

Tap the feed name at the top left of the Feed tab to switch. On iPhone you can also hold the Feed tab and slide up.

  • Following: people you follow. It's always on.
  • Discover: the people your follows follow.
  • Global: everyone in your web of trust, without replies.
  • Hashtags: the hashtags you follow.
  • Popular: what's getting the most replies, reposts, likes and zaps.
  • Media: photos and videos.
  • diVines: short looping videos.
  • Articles: long-form posts. An edited article shows once.
  • Recipes: recipes posted for zap.cooking.
  • Marketplace: things for sale.
  • Live: live streams, loaded fresh each time.
  • Polls: polls you can vote in.
  • Music: tracks from Wavlake.

Pick yours

Edit Feeds

Open the feed menu and tap Edit Feeds at the bottom.

  1. Tap a feed to show or hide it.
  2. Drag a feed to move it. On Android, drag the handle.
  3. Tap Reset to Default to start over.

Following can't be hidden. If you hide the feed you're on, you go back to Following.

Spam stays out

Web of Trust or Everyone

Global, Media, Articles, diVines, Recipes, Live and Marketplace show only people in your web of trust: people you follow and the people they follow. A shield at the top right says Web of Trust.

Tap it to switch to Everyone. You'll get a Sensitive Content Warning first, because Everyone is unfiltered and you should expect spam. It starts on Web of Trust.

Everyone stays locked until you follow at least 5 people. Until then the shield shows a lock, and tapping it explains why: Everyone is locked, how many of the 5 you follow, and how many more to go, for example "Follow 3 more people to unlock Everyone". Follow a few people and the switch opens. If you had already turned Everyone on, it stays on.

If your web isn't built yet, Global and Media stay empty instead of showing everyone.

The buttons at the top

Each feed shows the buttons that make sense for it.

  • Reposts, Replies and Auto-load on Following, Discover and Global. These are the same switches as in Settings, so turning one off here turns it off everywhere.
  • Languages on Global: pick one or more, or All languages. Your phone guesses each post's language. Posts too short to tell are kept.
  • Following or Global on Media, Articles, Recipes, Marketplace, diVines and Live, to pick whose posts you see.
  • On Popular, a menu to rank posts from everyone, only follows, or only people you don't follow.
  • A layout button: Expanded View, Compact View or Threaded View. Each feed remembers its own.

Staying current

New posts

When new posts arrive, a pill at the top says how many. Tap it to load them, or pull down on the feed. Turn on Auto-load to add them as they arrive. Tap the Feed tab again to jump to the top.

A repost shows "name reposted" above the post.

Settings

Feed & Display

Open Settings → Feed & Display.

  • Show Reposts and Show Replies (both on to start), and Auto-Load New Posts (off to start).
  • Send Delay: how long a post, reply, repost or delete waits before going out, so you can undo it. Off sends right away.
  • Reload Feed: clears the posts loaded on this device and loads your feed again. To check for new posts, just pull down.
  • New Posts Pill: turn off to wait until you pull down.
  • Zaps Only: hides likes and reactions and turns off their notifications.

Keeping it clean

Spam and blocking

  • Empty posts, long runs of the same character, short posts stuffed with hashtags or mentions, and known spam words are dropped before you see them.
  • From a post's menu, tap Block User to hide someone everywhere, including their reposts and replies, or Report Post.
  • Live leaves out adult streams. diVines leaves out videos marked with a content warning.

Brand new to Nostr

Filling an empty feed

A new account starts with an empty Following feed. Fill Your Feed walks you through it:

  1. Tap Let's fill it and pick a few topics you like.
  2. Browse posts about them. Tap anyone to see their profile first.
  3. Follow people you like. The meter at the bottom fills with each follow.
  4. At five follows your web of trust is built, and Following, Discover and Global fill in.

If you already follow five or more people, you won't see it.

Replay it in the app: Settings → Help → Tutorials → Fill Your Feed or Your Feeds.

On each device

  • iPhone, iPad and Android have everything on this page. Android puts Live before Marketplace and Send Delay under Appearance.
  • Mac has the same feeds and Edit Feeds.
  • The web app has Following, Global, Popular, Media, Articles, Recipes, Marketplace, Live and Music. It doesn't have Edit Feeds, the shield or the language filter.
