Your vault

Keep a copy you can restore.

Save your vault's notes and media as files, roll your follow list back to an earlier version, and bring back a post you deleted by mistake.

Notes and media

Backup & Restore

Open Settings → Your Vault Relay → Backup & Restore. It has two parts, and each one is its own file.

  • Notes. Export Notes saves everything in your vault as a .zip: your notes, private notes, messages (still encrypted), the notes that mention you and your feed cache. Import Notes puts a notes backup back.
  • Media. Export Media saves the photos and videos in your vault's media server as a .zip. Import Media puts them back.

On iPhone the file goes to the share sheet, so you can save it to Files or send it to your Mac. On the Mac and Android you pick where to save it.

A restore adds to what's already in the vault. Anything it already has is skipped, and nothing is deleted. The vault pauses for a moment while notes are saved or restored.

Your keys are not in the backup. A backup holds notes and media only. Keep your key (or your signer) safe on its own; see Accounts & Keys in the app.

On iPhone and Mac, start the vault before you export media. On iPhone and Android, the Vault tab has the same exports under Keep it full: Export notes and Back up media.

Your follow list

Following Backup

A follow list on Nostr is one list that gets replaced every time it changes. A buggy app can wipe it. Nostr Vault keeps a snapshot each time your list changes, up to 50, on your device.

  1. Open Settings → Following Backup.
  2. Pick a snapshot. It shows who you no longer follow and who was added since. You can re-follow one person, or tap Restore This List to put the whole list back.
  3. Confirm. The restored list replaces your current one and is published to your relays.

If your list was wiped somewhere else, Scan Relays looks for older copies of it on your relays.

Recently Deleted

Posts you delete on a device stay in Settings → Recently Deleted on that device for 30 days.

  • Un-delete posts it again as a new post. Likes and replies on the old post don't come back.
  • Delete Forever removes the copy now.

Profiles and lists aren't kept here. Recently Deleted is in the apps and the web app.

Backups on the web

The web app keeps its vault in your browser, so back it up if it holds anything you don't have elsewhere.

  • Settings → Backup & Restore: Export notes saves your notes, private notes, messages and feed cache as the same .zip the phone apps make, so either one restores the other. Photos and videos aren't in it.
  • Import notes reads that .zip back. It also reads a .jsonl backup from an older web app. Nothing is published either way.
